I can't believe that a little more than two weeks ago I was hacking through thick ice with a hatchet to clear two tracks wide enough for my car to get safely up and down the driveway. Now there are daffodils and day lilies coming up, and it looks like there's been an explosion of Eastern Comma butterflies, with an occasional Spring Azure adding to the swirl.

Today, I saw and heard at least one Eastern Phoebe around a nesting site that phoebes have used before. This morning I heard jays and saw a small woodpecker and some other birds I wasn't close enough to identify.

After a walk through my observation area -- none of the trees or flowers are showing any phase shifts yet -- I came back and did some prep work on my patio planters. This year I'm planting some bergamot, bee balm and butterfly milkweed, all from organic seeds, which I'll be starting inside soon.
