When Shadow and Celie hear something in the holler they used to take flying leaps off the edge of the porch to check things out -- until I put up this dog-detour.
Now that she's older, Celie (my Walker hound) has a little arthritis in one hip. I saw her leg give out when she landed one of these leaps a few days ago. I decided I had to figure out a way to discourage any more take-offs from the porch. My solution: a rope barrier with bandana flagging so they could see or sense it, even at night.
It's working!
I planned to try this first with stuff I had around the house, then invest in a more permanent barrier later. Now that it's up, I kind of like it the way it is...something cheery about the bandanas.
Buddy, of course, still goes anywhere he wants:
